Scout Motors’ Traveler SUV and Terra truck are attractive tributes to the International Harvester Scout. Both feature body-on-frame construction with mechanically locking front and rear differentials for off-roading performance.
Both vehicles feature short overhangs and squared edges, giving them a distinctive appearance compared to Rivian’s R2. Furthermore, each cargo area includes an accessible frunk for 120V power supply as well as USB-C connections for convenience.
Powertrain
The Traveler SUV and Terra pickup both boast electric powertrains with an estimated range of up to 350 miles. Both EV models utilize body-on-frame architecture with solid rear axle and disconnecting front sway bar to help tackle tough terrain, along with 35″ all-terrain tires, front/rear mechanical locking differentials, and three foot wading depth for ease of navigation.
Scout reports their vehicle can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in as little as 3.5 seconds, featuring an 800-volt architecture and North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports capable of fast charging up to 350 kilowatts. Furthermore, bi-directional charging will enable owners to send energy back into the grid.
Traveler suggests an exciting future by including an innovative front trunk/frunk large enough to store a golf bag and cooler as well as 120-volt and 240-volt outlets. Also in nod to its history, Scout offers an optional “range extender” engine to add power to the high voltage battery pack.
Design
The Traveler SUV and Terra truck both exude rugged, boxy styling that pays homage to their predecessor’s Scout nameplate. Both models boast short overhangs with squared edges for a distinct appearance as well as horizontal daytime running lights for enhanced visibility at night. In addition, their tall stance makes them look like true off-roaders despite sporting 35-inch tires.
Trucks feature full glass roofs and cargo areas that can be configured to give an open feel. In addition, front trunks are available to store golf bags, gym bags or coolers and offer 120V and USB power outlets.
Though some details remain to be finalized, both Traveler and Terra will be pure electric vehicles equipped with battery packs capable of traveling 350 miles on one charge. In response to some individuals requiring their vehicles in areas without charging infrastructure available, Scout will offer gas-powered range extenders as an additional solution for both Traveler and Terra.
Interior
Scout Motors recently unveiled its production-intent Traveler SUV and Terra truck, prompting many people to compare them with Rivian trucks through a retro lens. However, Shaheen Karimian of Scout Motors informed enthusiasts that none of their mechanical or interior parts came from Rivian R1S that was co-developed with VW; instead these rugged-looking trucks provide more open seating with removable roof panels for greater openness; additionally featuring real knobs and switches rather than touchscreen infotainment systems for ease of navigation.
Scout has designed two vehicles on a body-on-frame platform, which it believes is optimal for off-roading and towing applications. Each can tow 10,000 pounds and accelerate from zero to 60 in just 3.5 seconds; additionally, they feature an 800-volt architecture and 350 kilowatt charging capabilities, which allow owners to charge using North American Charging Standard plugs as well as bidirectional power transfer allowing owners to unload energy back into their home or grid system.
