Are You Old Enough to Ride a Motorcycle?

If you have a permit but are unsure if you are old enough to ride a motorcycle, you can take a safety course to learn the ins and outs of riding a bike safely. The test requires you to know a motorcycle’s basic operation and the rules of the road. You also need to have a valid driver’s license, so you can drive the motorcycle. You can apply for a motorcycle permit online or at a motorcycle safety school.

First, you must be 15 1/2 years old and possess a regular state drivers license. If you do not, you will need to get an instruction permit. This permit is valid for one year. You can only drive a motorcycle if you are accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 18 years old and has at least one year of experience. You also cannot carry passengers on your motorcycle until you have passed the test. You must also bring a copy of a document with your name, address and age from less than one year ago.

Obtaining a motorcycle permit is easy. You will need to apply through the Department of Motor Vehicles. For this, you must have a California Driver’s License Application and proof of completion of a motorcyclist training course. If you are under 21, you will also need a Certificate of Completion for Motorcyclist Training Course. In addition, you will need a valid form of payment for the license application fee.

Once you have a motorcycle permit, you can begin taking practical lessons and riding on the road. The course will include training on the controls of the motorcycle, proper riding gear, the rules of the road, and lane usage. You will also need to go to a DMV office to take the motorcycle training and receive your license. You will also receive a copy of a motorcycle manual that contains important information regarding motorcycle safety.

If you are under the age of 18, you can also take a motorcycle safety course. This course is required by California law for under-age riders and consists of five hours of classroom learning and 10 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. The rules for driving a motorcycle differ from driving a car. Motorcyclists must use the entire lane. This is because motorcycles are manual and their brake levers and accelerator are operated with the hands. Turning into a corner is also a full-body experience that requires the motorcyclist to use his or her entire body. This makes certain situations more dangerous than others for the motorcyclist.

To get a motorcycle license, you must pass a knowledge and vision exam. You will need to score 80% on the knowledge portion of the exam. This test can be repeated two times, but you must wait seven days for a minor to retake it. In the meantime, you can take a motorcycle permit online or at a motorcycle license renewal office. The fee for the license varies depending on the class of driver you are.
